Requirements

macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple Silicon or Intel. Apple Music (built into macOS) or Spotify.

Getting started

Open GroovSide and a turntable appears on your desktop, behind your icons. GroovSide lives in the menu bar (the record icon) and has no Dock icon. Play a song in Music or Spotify. The first time, macOS asks to let GroovSide read from Music or Spotify. Click OK.

Common questions

I don't see the turntable

It sits on the desktop, under your windows. Hide or move your windows, or click Show Desktop in the welcome note. Check that Show on Desktop is ticked in the menu bar menu, and that your display is turned on in Settings → Displays.

The song doesn't show up

Open Settings → Players. If it says Not Allowed, click Open Automation Settings… and turn on Music or Spotify under GroovSide. If GroovSide isn't in that list, quit GroovSide, run this in Terminal, then open GroovSide again and play a song:

tccutil reset AppleEvents kim.zinu.groovside

Does GroovSide control my music?

No. It only reads what's playing. It never changes playback and never opens Music or Spotify by itself.

Why isn't an album split into sides?

The first time an album plays, GroovSide looks it up in Apple's iTunes catalog to find its track list and song lengths. This sends the artist, album and song names to Apple (see the Privacy Policy). If it can't find a matching edition, the record still plays, just without sides.

Fast-forward and rewind don't move the record in Spotify

That works with Apple Music only. Spotify doesn't report fast-forward or rewind.

How do I start it when I log in?

Turn on Open at Login in Settings → General.

How do I remove it?

Quit GroovSide from the menu bar and move it from Applications to the Trash. To remove its settings and saved records too, delete ~/Library/Containers/kim.zinu.groovside.
